It plays a role of transient/auxiliary application. That means it can work with a specific part of a webpage. It can display a small portion of other websites, Like if you have ever seen social widget on any website. You are allowed to go on your desired social media to follow that website. Other common terms that can also referred to Widgets are portlet, web part, gadget, badge, module, snippet and flake.
