OCR devices range from large machines that can read thousands of documents per minute to handheld wands that read one document at a time.

Many companies use OCR characters on turnaround documents. A turnaround document is a document that you return (turn around) to the company that creates and sends it. For example, when con sumers receive a bill, they often tear off a portion of the bill and send it back to the company with their payment. The portion of the bill they return usually has their payment amount, account number, and other information printed in OCR characters.
