Difference Between Motherboard and Chipset

Motherboard vs Chipset

Summary: Difference Between Motherboard and Chipset is that Motherboard, sometimes called a system board, is the main circuit board of the system unit. Many electronic components attach to the motherboard; others are built into it. While group of micro chips that are specially designed to work with one or more functions is known as Chipsets.

Motherboard

Motherboard, sometimes called a system board, is the main circuit board of the system unit. Many electronic components attach to the motherboard; others are built into it. Above image shows a current desktop personal computer motherboard and identifies its slots for adapter cards, the processor chip, and memory. Memory chips are installed on memory cards (modules) that fit in a slot on the motherboard.

A computer chip is a small piece of semiconducting material, usually silicon, on which integrated circuits are etched. An integrated circuit contains many microscopic pathways capable of carrying electrical current. Each integrated circuit can contain millions of elements such as resistors, capacitors, and transistors. Specific types of processor, memory, and other chips.

Chipset

A group of micro chips that are specially designed to work with one or more functions is known as Chipsets. When the chips and technologies introduced 82C206 in 1986, the first chipset was introduced also in 1986. The 1986 invention first chipset 82C206 included; 82288 Bus Controller, 82284 Clock Generator functions, dual 8259 Interrupt Controllers, dual 8237 DMA controllers, 8254 System Timer, and MC146818 Clock.

But then it got replaced with a new chipset CS8221 or also named as NEAT (New Enhanced AT) chipset which contains only three chips. And later on, the CS8221 chipset got replaced by 82C836 Chipset or SCAT (Single Chip AT) chipset. In SCAT chipset there is only one chip that is combined technology of all chips. The well-known manufacturer’s of Chipsets are AMD, ALi, Intel, SiS, NVidia, and VIA.
