Difference Between Rows and Columns Explained

Whether you are collecting data or organizing things, you need to make rows and columns. A lot of people are confused about rows and columns. The data has to be arranged in a concise matter so that it can be understood. A lot of time, statistical experts arrange data in tabular form so that it is easy to understand for the people who are reading it.

Columns and rows are used in spreadsheets, matrixes, and grouping of data. Facts and figures are also arranged in a tabular form so that they are easily comprehended. The Difference between Rows and Columns is that rows are horizontal while columns are vertical. When they are arranged together, they form a table.

Rows:

Rows run horizontally, from left to right. In any table, there are four different parts that are caption, body, stub, and box-head. On the top part is the caption in which columns come into play. On the left, you can see the rows. This is also called the stub of a table. If you are making a table with data in it, the total of that data is on the extreme right corner, in the last column.

If you are making rows in a database system, they are called records and they contain fields. Rows are made for grouping of statistical data and for making spreadsheets. If you are just making a table for inventory or household activity, rows are present in it too.

Column:

In columns, the words or figures are arranged one after another. When columns are present in a table, they are separated from each other with lines. This increases the readability of the columns and makes them more attractive.

Since columns are placed side by side, vertically, they are used for comparison of two different factors or attributes. The caption for columns is written on the topmost part of a table. The total number of data in a column is written at the bottom, in the last row.

When arranging data in a database systems, columns are called fields and they contain characters. Columns are also used in matrices, just like rows. Along with that columns help in separating different factors or fields.
